Exclusive to ACSAA conference attendees, this day-trip from Atlanta to Birmingham provides a scholar’s day for attendees to view and discuss all aspects of the newly opened special exhibition Expanding Darshan: Manjari Sharma, To See and Be Seen that brings Sharma’s Darshan series in conversation with the diverse historic collections of the Birmingham Museum of Art, accompanied by a full color catalog. Rich topics for group discussion include issues of transparency, provenance, authenticity, connecting contemporary and classical arts as well the role of public education and layers of public service such exhibitions create.

The BMA also has dedicated South and Southeast Asian galleries in which are featured arguably the finest collection of ceramics of Southeast Asia in the Americas (see: “Dragons and Lotus Blossoms: Vietnamese Ceramics from the Birmingham Museum of Art”) and strengths in Buddhist works from Cambodia, Gandhara, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Tibet as well as folk arts of India.

The Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA) has been collecting and exhibiting the arts of South and Southeast Asia since its founding in 1951.
